Napoleon was here. Sissi was here. And not only that, she even left a carriage here: If you are interested in history and culture, Syros is the place to be. The island is not only home to the administrative center of the Cyclades, but also looks back on a long and eventful history. Syros was already inhabited in the Bronze Age and archaeological finds date back to 3000 BC.

Influenced by ancient Greece, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman rule, the Catholic and Greek Orthodox communities on Syros live together harmoniously today. Easter is a special annual highlight for both religions and also for tourists and is celebrated jointly by Catholics and Orthodox.

Ermoupoli: The heart of Cycladic culture

The capital Ermoupoli is full of art, culture and architecture: designed by the famous German-Greek architect Ernst Ziller, the magnificent town hall and Miaouli Square are now an important focal point and center of the city. The Orthodox Agios Nikolaos (St. Nicholas) Church sits enthroned in beautiful pastel colors in the middle of the Vaporia district. Built in 1848, it is one of the city's most important landmarks and complements the neoclassical cityscape.

Apollon Theater

The beautifully preserved Ano Syros, the city's historic quarter, is enthroned on a small hill and is definitely worth a visit. The island capital of Ermoupoli also offers the most cultural events in Greece alongside Athens. In addition to professional and amateur drama in the magnificent Apollon Theater, the island's sporting focus is primarily on basketball. Nice to know: the founder of the Olympic Games comes from Syros. Speaking of sport. Those who like it active and sporty will also find numerous opportunities for hiking in Syros.

The journey: What are you waiting for...

What is the best way to get to Syros? The easiest way to get there is from Athens, the capital of Greece. From here, 3-4 small planes a day fly directly to the island, taking only about 20 minutes per flight. Alternatively, you can also take the ferry from here. Regular crossings are offered from the city port of Piraeus, as well as from Lavrio in summer. Your short vacation on Syros can therefore also be perfectly combined with a city trip to Athens. Or you can travel from the island of Mykonos. This is particularly suitable if you are planning island hopping. The ferries from here take between half an hour and an hour and a half, depending on the provider. And even though the island is absolutely safe, the locals prefer to leave their keys in their pockets and the crime rate on the island is close to zero, it's best to leave your car or rental car at home. The small alleyways of the capital Ermoupoli are best explored on foot or by scooter and there are very few parking spaces. If you want to visit the island's beautiful beaches and travel further afield, a rental car is still recommended for greater flexibility.
