The most beautiful bathing lakes in Austria

With more than 25,000 lakes, Austria is a true paradise for bathing holidaymakers. The variety of lakes is unbeatable: From idyllic mountain lakes in nature reserves to lively lidos with versatile water sports activities, everything is there. Romantik has put together a selection of the most beautiful bathing lakes in Austria to prepare you ideally for your next holiday.

Lake Achensee

The mountain lake Achensee is the largest lake in Tyrol and has excellent water quality. Embedded in the Karwendel nature reserve, the shores of the lake are accessible to everyone throughout. Thanks to the unique mountain location, the water remains rather cool even in summer and reaches temperatures of up to 20°C. Bathers can choose between five bathing beaches and lidos around the lake. In addition to bathers, the lake is also very popular with anglers and divers.

Lake Altaussee

Lake Altaussee is especially known for its crystal-clear water with its intense dark blue colouring and is also called the "dark blue inkwell" because of its special colour. It is located in the middle of the Styrian Salzkammergut and impresses with its naturalness. This is preserved thanks to the fact that it is part of a nature reserve, which is why the lake shores are also almost undeveloped. From spring to autumn, the lake invites you to swim and linger.

Attersee

Lake Attersee is the largest lake in Austria, which is also located entirely in the country. Located in the middle of the Upper Austrian Salzkammergut, the water of the glacial lake is exceptionally pure and clear. Even under water, it is therefore possible to see up to 25 metres away. With several lidos as well as an adventure pool and water temperatures of up to 25°C, Lake Attersee invites you to a bathing holiday in the summer months.Tip: For a longer stay at Lake Attersee, it is advisable to purchase the Attersee-Bädercard, which allows admission to up to seven lidos.

Mondsee

In the immediate vicinity of Lake Attersee is Lake Mondsee, also in the Salzkammergut. The water of the Mondsee is of drinking water quality and thus impresses with its special purity and cleanliness. On the shores of the 14 km² lake, numerous sandy and meadowy beaches make for a pleasant stay. The most beautiful bathing spots on the lake include Loibichl, Plomberg and Schwarzindien. Special highlight: The village of See am Mondsee is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and enchants nature lovers with its beautiful mountain scenery.

Wolfgangsee

At 13 km², Lake Wolfgangsee is one of the best-known lakes in the Salzkammergut region. The lakeside invites holidaymakers to linger and also offers numerous water sports activities. Above all, water skiing, water hoops or even parasailing provide variety during a bathing holiday. In addition, the lake can be wonderfully explored with pedal boats and electric boats.

Hotel tip in the Salzkammergut:

Directly on the lake, the Romantik Hotel im Weissen Rössl on Lake Wolfgang offers its guests the ideal starting point for exploring the idyllic bathing lakes in the region. The hotel combines Austrian tradition with modern elements and invites you to relax in the large SPA area. Especially in the culinary area, the hotel's own restaurants spoil their guests with delicacies from Austrian cuisine and an exclusive selection of wines from the traditional Rössl rock cellar.

Weissensee

Weissensee is the highest bathing lake in Carinthia and is located at an altitude of 930 metres. The water quality of the lake is excellent and with an area of 6.5 km² the lake invites you to carefree bathing on its shores. Due to up to 2000 hours of sunshine a year, the temperatures are very pleasant and the water reaches up to 24°C with excellent water quality.

Lake Turrach

Between Carinthia and Styria, you will discover the idyllic mountain lake Turracher See on the Turracher Höhe. At an altitude of 1,763 metres, it offers holidaymakers numerous activities against a dreamlike backdrop. The water temperature of the lake does not rise above 18°C even in summer and definitely allows for a successful cooling down after a strenuous hike. Lake Turrach is covered with a thick layer of ice for about half of the year. Not far from the lake are the Turracher Grünsee and the Turracher Schwarzsee, which also invite you to take a refreshing swim.

Lake Millstätter See

The 11.5 km long Millstätter See has ten lidos with spacious sunbathing areas, some of which also have sandy beaches. Thanks to the many hours of sunshine per year, temperatures of up to 28°C can be reached in the bays when there is no wind. Lake Millstätter See is also very popular with anglers due to its variety of fish.

In addition to swimming, the lidos of Zell am See, Thumersbach and Schüttdorf offer the possibility of boat trips and sailing tours. By not using private motorboats, the drinking water quality of the lake can be preserved.

Green Lake

Actually, the Grüner See in the Austrian province of Styria is not a lake, yet it offers holidaymakers an unforgettable stay. Every year when the snow melts, the Tragößertal valley is transformed from a mountain meadow into a crystal-clear, emerald-green underwater world, creating a lake up to ten metres deep. Below the surface, divers in particular will find an extraordinary world of sunken meadows, bushes, paths and trees.
