Ambience at the Wellings Romantik Hotel Zur Linde
Halde Rheinpreussen lamp
On top of the Halde spoil heap in Moers-Meerbeck, there is a 30-metre-high light tower in the shape of a mining lamp visible from far afield. When it is dark, the mining lamp radiates its typical light while the hillside beneath it is lit up ruby red like molten iron. A walk here during the daytime gives you a marvellous view of the Lower Rhine countryside, the Duisburg industrial landscape and the neighbouring cities. This industrial work of art is well worth a visit.
A particular highlight in Kamp-Lintfort is Kamp Abbey, a former Cistercian monastery. Founded in 1123, it developed into a blessed place. The abbey church, the beautifully landscaped, charming baroque terraced garden and the museum are all worth seeing, as is the "new old" vaulted cellar. The Rokokosaal plays host to cultural events such as the Kamper concerts, chamber music, readings, gourmet evenings and the Chamber Music Festival. There are also art exhibitions and guided tours. The monastery was extensively renovated in 2003 and 2009. The café in the former refectory and the shop in the former recreation room are inviting places to spend some time.
Spend an unforgettable evening watching a performance at the multi-award-winning and highly acclaimed smallest theatre in Germany.
This park combines industrial culture, nature and a fascinating light show. At its centre stands a disused ironworks whose old industrial facilities have today been put to a wide variety of new uses.
81 hectares in size and 102 metres high, the Halde Norddeutschland is a former spoil heap of the Niederberg mine that is now closed and ceased tipping here in March 2001. Over 80 million tons of mining waste – stone not containing coal extracted during coal mining – was tipped here during the last few decades to form this impressive hill in otherwise flat countryside. This has become the key project of the Landschaftspark Niederrhein regional initiative. One of the landmarks of the Halde Norddeutschland is the "Himmelstreppe" art work erected in 2007. A 52-metre-staircase with 359 steps, it is the shortest way to get to the top of the spoil heap. This artwork particularly comes alive at night.
