Summit in sight

The short hike across the German-Austrian border has a lot to offer and shines with a magnificent mountain panorama. The view from the summit of the 2,692-metre-high Zugspitze of the winter-white mountains, the deep snow-covered valleys and the seemingly endless expanse is overwhelming and whets your appetite for the planned hiking tour. A special highlight: the Zugspitze cable car makes it possible to reach the Zugspitze glacier with its panoramic platform effortlessly and without any strain. The easy hike from Germany to Austria thus combines hiking and the ride on the Zugspitz cable car, making for a pleasantly active exploration of the beautiful Alps.

The hiking route at a glance:

  1. Station 1.: From Grainau to Lake Eibsee
  2. Station 2.: From the valley station to Ehrwald
Zugspitze

The Zugspitze: A mountain of superlatives

At 2,962 metres, the Zugspitze is the highest elevation in Germany and includes three glaciers. The Zugspitze massif is located southwest of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and north of Tyrol. On and around the Zugspitze, numerous activities invite you to spend an eventful day - in summer and winter. In addition to hikers and mountaineers, climbing fans and paragliders will also find ideal conditions and a fantastic mountain panorama here.

Border experience: hiking trail from Germany to Austria

The hike can be started from either place. Hikers can expect unique natural landscapes in both countries and a mountain panorama that invites you to dream. The hike runs in two stages and is pleasantly interrupted by a ride on the Zugspitz cable car.

Eibsee

Station 1.: From Grainau to Lake Eibsee

From Grainau, the first stage leads to the beautiful Eibsee, which is reached after only about 1.5 hours. The ascent of 263 metres is rewarded with the breathtaking nature around the Eibsee and shimmering green, crystal-clear water. Before the trip to the Zugspitze, a short stay here is also a good idea: whether a walk along the small paths or a boat trip on the clear lake, a breather at the Eibsee lets hikers experience Bavarian nature up close.

Hotel tip:

The Romantik Alpenhotel Waxenstein in Grainau is the ideal starting point for the hike. Located at the foot of the Bavarian Alps, it offers a unique view of the fascinating mountain world, even from the rooms. In the gourmet restaurant "Henri-Philippe", holidaymakers are offered a unique cuisine: Traditional Alpine specialities are skilfully combined with French haute cuisine.

Zugspitz cable car

Zugspitz cable car

The Bayerische Zugspitz cable car offers hikers two ways to get to the Zugspitze summit. The rack railway already starts in Garmisch-Partenkirchen with intermediate stops in Hammersbach, Grainau and Eibsee. From there, the ride up to the Zugspitzplatt takes 45 minutes. Faster and more spectacular, the newer Zugspitze cable car floats from Eibsee station to Germany's highest mountain peak in just 10 minutes. On a clear day, the view of some 400 mountain peaks in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy and a distant view of up to 250 kilometres is unique.

A panorama cabin of the Tyrolean Zugspitz cable car brings holidaymakers back to Ehrwald in the valley. This transports up to 100 passengers at a time in a ten-minute ride down to the valley.

Tip:

On the internet, webcams provide information about the current weather situation and visibility. This allows holidaymakers to plan their visit to the Zugspitze and benefit from a great view, especially when the weather is fine. More information on Zugspitze webcams.

Ehrwald

Station 2.: From the valley station to Ehrwald

Arriving at the valley station of the Tyrolean Zugspitz cable car, a slightly sloping hiking trail leads to Ehrwald. The route is 4.4 kilometres and is a rather easy hiking route with a descent of 230 metres. Holidaymakers hike for about an hour on the hiking trail parallel to the access road to Ehrwald and enjoy the tranquillity of nature and the fantastic surroundings.
