The idyllic mountain village of Appenzell is picturesquely nestled against a dreamlike mountain backdrop. As an ideal starting point for exploring the region, the mountain village is particularly appealing thanks to its cosy charm. Appenzell and the surrounding area are particularly famous for its traditional farms as well as the world-famous Appenzell cheese, which has been produced in the region for more than 700 years.

CULTURE & TRADITION

Stroll through the quiet centre of Appenzell and take in the artistic flair. The pedestrian zone as the town centre provides a pleasant and quiet town atmosphere and allows for extensive strolling. Passing boutiques and exciting galleries, the artistically designed facades in the Hauptgasse are particularly fascinating. Notable here is the Hampi Fässler house, which stands out with its baroque window frames and decoratively painted drawers. A visit to Appenzell Castle or even the Heiligkreuz Chapel will immerse you deeply in the traditions of the region. This historical heritage is explained in detail in the Appenzell Museum. The so-called Landsgemeinde still takes place on Landsgemeindeplatz square: Since time immemorial, elections and important matters in the village have been regularly voted on here by a show of hands, bringing together all the citizens of Appenzell. You can catch a glimpse of the art of brewing traditional Appenzell beer on the other side of the river Sitter at the Locher brewery, which has been producing beer for over 100 years. You can also get to know the different specialities during a tasting.

NATURE & ACTIVITIES

In addition to the cultural highlights in Appenzell, an excursion into the alpine landscape around Appenzell is a great way to get away from it all. Here, the wildflower-strewn meadows, rugged mountain peaks and idyllic valleys are ideal for extensive hikes of all levels. For a relaxing ascent, take the cable car from Wasserauen, which takes you up to Ebenalp at an altitude of 1,640 metres and offers a fantastic view of the surrounding area. The Appenzell region is also very popular with winter sports fans in winter. Cross-country skiers explore the region on over 200 kilometres of trails, and for alpine skiers and snowboarders, extensive slopes in the Ebenalp-Schwende and Kronberg ski areas have plenty to offer.

HOTEL TIP:
