How the ESC works:

The Eurovision Song Contest spans an entire week of music, excitement and suspense. First, there are two semi-finals – traditionally on Tuesday and Thursday – in which the participating countries qualify for the grand final on Saturday evening. Each nation determines its entry individually: some countries hold spectacular preliminary rounds, while others select their act internally. In the grand final, the jury and public voting together decide the winner. The combination of professional evaluation and millions of televotes ensures thrilling surprises, emotional moments and, of course, plenty to talk about year after year.

Which countries participate in the ESC?

The Eurovision Song Contest is a musical celebration of diversity. In 2026, around 40 countries will once again compete for the coveted title on the stage in Vienna. Participating countries include nations from across Europe that are members of the European Broadcasting Union – from Sweden to Spain, Iceland to Greece, Ireland to Israel – and even Australia, which has been a permanent fixture at the ESC since 2015. The so-called ‘Big Five’ are automatically qualified for the grand final: Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, plus the host country Austria. All other acts must compete in the two semi-finals before battling for the hearts of the audience and the points of the jury on the final evening.
