Around Lake Geneva
The area around the largest lake in France and Switzerland is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful corners of the continent and presents itself in front of a magnificent alpine backdrop. Landmarks such as the Chillon Castle near Montreux are popular and visited by holidaymakers from all over the world. Sporty visitors can dive down to the wreck of the Hirondelle at a depth of around 50 metres, discover the lake by sailing boat or climb the surrounding mountains. For a calmer experience a leisurely boat trip across the lake or relaxing sunbathing in the summer months are suggested. There is plenty to discover around Lake Geneva, both on the Swiss and French sides.
Small round trip on Lake Geneva
Fantastic places, cultural attractions and lots of bathing fun invite you to linger at Lake Geneva. Visitors should therefore plan enough time to explore the area around the lake. On the Swiss side of Lake Geneva there is plenty to see and do.
Near Montreux, Chillon Castle has been enthroned on a small rocky island since the 12th century and looks like a floating fortress. Today, the castle is mainly used for exhibitions and events in front of a dreamlike backdrop. In addition to individual guided tours, the castle also offers guided tours with workshops with costumed guides.
The Lavaux region on Lake Geneva is one of the most beautiful in Switzerland and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The region's unique landscape was created several million years ago after the end of the Ice Age and the melting of the Rhone Glacier. In the 12th century Cistercian monks laboriously built the kilometre-long stone walls and terraces, which are still used today for wine cultivation. Here, due to the steep slopes, everything is still done by hand today. In Lavaux we recommend a hike along the well signposted footpaths, which offer a breath-taking view of Lake Geneva and the Alps is a great experience.
Lausanne offers travellers plenty of variety and can easily be explored by bus, bicycle or on foot. Especially the district La Cité has a lot to offer: There are many small bistros, handicraft shops and original shops. In the centre of the Cité is the Lausanne Cathedral, one of the most beautiful Gothic cultural monuments. As the Olympic capital, Lausanne has been home to the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Museum for 100 years. In the museum directly on the lake, visitors can discover the main features and peculiarities of Olympism both interactively and audiovisually thanks to state-of-the-art technology.
The Romantik Hotel Mont Blanc au Lac is located about 10 kilometres from Lausanne in the romantic town of Morges on the lakeside promenade. Since 1857, the hotel has welcomed guests in comfortable rooms and invites them to linger in the restaurant Le Pavois. During the summer months, the restaurant serves delicacies on the sun terrace overlooking Lake Geneva.
The small town of Nyon is located between Geneva and Lausanne and is marked by an eventful history. Thanks to many excavations and sights, this history is still visible today. In the castle outside the old town, visitors will find, among other things, the Museum of History and Porcelain. Nyon is nestled between vineyards on the Route du Vignoble. The small town is also famous for its festivals. Among other things, the Paléo Festival attracts spectators year after year and was even able to win world star Celine Dion for 2020.
In Geneva, visitors are greeted by the Jet d'eau, the 140-metre-high water fountain on the lake. More than 500 litres of water are shot into the air every second at a speed of 200 km/h. In addition to the fountain, the old town is particularly beautiful and invites to stroll and shop. Besides that a stop at the cathedral St. Pierre is worthwhile, which offers a fantastic view of the surroundings from the north tower. In the immediate vicinity of the lake, there is also the English Garden with the famous flower clock.
