A sea to wonder – en route at the Baltic Sea coast

The Baltic Sea invites tourists all year round to active exploration tours. Whether actively to water, with one of the many water sports, or actively on land on foot or with the bicycle. Must-sees in the port city of Kiel

Before it goes sporty with the bicycle direction Timmendorfer beach a visit in the beautiful port city is worthwhile itself. Due to the fantastic location directly at the water a harbour tour is recommended to experience the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein from the right side. A stroll through the old town of Kiel leads to the idyllic Ratsdienergarten with the charming lake Kleiner Kiel, which invites you to relax especially in the summer months. The highlight and only a comfortable ferry ride away from Kiel is the Baltic seaside resort Laboe. There you will find the Navy Memorial and the famous submarine, which reports as a museum about the circumstances of the navy before and during the 2nd World War.

Tip: A visit to Kiel is especially worthwhile during the Kieler Woche, which takes place every year in June. The sailing regatta has been held in Kiel since the end of the 19th century and is considered one of the most fascinating sailing events in the world.

After a short stop in the small town, you continue by bike towards Bösdorf and from there to Sierksdorf by the sea. From Sierksdorf it goes then comfortably at the water along for about 10 kilometers up to Timmendorfer beach. With a comfortable total journey time of about 4 hours, the route is ideal for a day trip through beautiful Schleswig-Holstein.

Timmendorfer Beach

After the sporty bike tour, you reach the most famous beach of Germany with its 7 km long sandy beach and the thousands of coloured beach chairs. There is hardly any low tide or high tide here, which is why the sea is particularly peaceful and invites you to swim extensively. Besides the wonderful sea, the rest of the nature around Timmendorf beach is full of colours. Especially the Kurpark is ideal for a shady walk. For animal fans the underwater world at Sea Life has a lot to offer. There you will discover sharks, rays and sea turtles in about 40 pools. Also, a visit to the fishing harbour in Niendorf, a district of Timmendorfer Strand, is worthwhile, because there time has almost stopped and you feel like you are back in old fishing times.
