The Ithemba (Xhosa for hope) health centre at the Tygerberg Academic Teaching Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, has 24 beds and takes care for children 'with infectious diseases'. This general term is preferred, because it takes away the stigma. At the same time it proves the sensitivity that is part of the AIDS topic in South Africa. The patients stay from a few days to some months. To guarantee optimal care an adult family member may or should stay with the little patients. In this way the relatives learn everything about the future nursing.
The health centre was founded by HOPE Cape Town.
On March 26th, 2010 Romantik Managing Director Inge Struckmeier visited the health centre with Prix Romantik Liebold awardee Joachim Franz and priest Stefan Hippler from HOPE Cape Town. Before they officially handed over the badge they visited a township hospital, saw the homes of HIV positive people in the townships and spoke with employees of HOPE Cape Town. This is important to get the whole picture of the care network and to learn about the different responsibilities and parts of the work.
